Waste disposal procedures at MolES

Dispose of lab and office waste using the procedures outlined below. Please contact nmbuild@uw.edu if assistance is needed or if there are questions about how to dispose of items not mentioned below.

Biohazardous waste
Ship out for disposal using UW’s hazardous waste disposal vendor (Waste Management) or sterilize in 4th floor autoclave. Must open a Waste Management account to ship through them. Must complete autoclave training before using autoclave. Please contact nmbuild@uw.edu for assistance with either option.

Chemical waste
Dispose of in accordance with EH&S procedures (http://www.ehs.washington.edu/epowaste/chemwaste.shtm). Remember to update MyChem inventory as appropriate.

Lab glass and sharps
Dispose of in accordance with the attached poster. For lab glass boxes, Custodial Services will only dispose of boxes less than 2’ x 2’ in size and less than 25 lbs in weight, placed next to a regular trash can.

Place in the battery collection box in the MolES mail room.

Cardboard boxes
Break down and place in the green toters in each floor’s lab space, or in the “cardboard only” dumpster on the loading dock.

Empty chemical containers
Many can be recycled in regular recycle dumpster. See http://www.ehs.washington.edu/system/files/resources/EHS_Focus_Sheet_Empty_Containers.pdf for proper procedure.

Gel packs
Place in any regular trash can.

Lightbulbs (all types)
If unbroken, drop off in mail room. Dispose of broken incandescent bulbs as lab glass. Dispose of broken fluorescent bulbs per EH&S guidelines (http://www.ehs.washington.edu/system/files/resources/Focus_Sheet-Mercury_Lamps.pdf).

Miscellaneous electronics and digital media
Small items should be dropped off in the collection box in the mail room, large items should be sent to UW Surplus.

Packing peanuts
Empty into the packing peanut recycle bag in the MolES mail room.

Other Styrofoam (including thermal shipping blocks)
Remove all labels and tape and place on floor next to the packing peanut bag in the mail room.

Pallets and other lumber
Lean against wall next to phone on loading dock.

Plastic film (packing material, cling film, etc)
Place in the “plastic film” bin at the back of the loading dock (air filled packing inserts should be deflated first).

Printer cartridges, drums, etc.
Drop off in mail room.
